The Volturi are the largest organized coven of vampires in the Twilight series of fictional young adult novels by Stephenie Meyer. The Volturi ‘hire’ other vampires with special abilities or powers to help enforce the simple rules of the vampire world.

Background

In the Twilight series, the Volturi are the most powerful family of vampires, residing in the city of Volterra, Italy–which was supposedly named after the Volturi. The Volturi have been in existence for at least three thousand years, if not more, and are some of the most sophisticated vampires. However, unlike the Cullens, the Volturi are “real” vampires; that is, they do not follow the “vegetarian” diet that is followed by the main characters of the series, but instead drink the blood of humans. Therefore, they have red eyes instead of the topaz colored Cullen eyes.

Purpose

Although they are not an ‘official’ royal family, the Volturi are an incredibly influential coven. They act as guardians, keeping the secret society of vampires hidden from the human world as needed. They often send others to travel from Volterra to prevent overzealous covens and renegade vampires from exposing their species. In Eclipse, they traveled to Forks, Washington to destroy Victoria’s evil coven of newborn vampires, as they were feeding in the nearby city of Seattle, causing an abnormally high number of deaths. Currently in the Twilight series, the Volturi are becoming an increasing problem to the Cullen family, as the Cullens have agreed that Bella Swan will be turned into a vampire as soon as possible, because humans are not supposed to know about vampires.

Powers

Most of the Volturi have very strong powers: Jane can give anyone the illusion of pain while they are under her gaze; Aro can see all of the thoughts that a person has ever had, while making physical contact with that person; Marcus can sense relationships; Demetri can track anyone once he has the tenor of their mind. Jane has the ability to make others ‘think’ that they are in pain, while they are really not. Luckily, Bella is unaffected by anything that is physical. Others’ powers are not mentioned, but are rumored to be just as powerful. Interestingly, Bella is unaffected by the powers which affect the mind.

Current members

The leaders of the Volturi:

  • Aro
  • Caius
  • Marcus

There are also two un-named female vampires who are part of the coven. There used to be a sixth member as well, who was Marcus’s mate, but she was killed in battle.

Members of the guard:

  • Jane
  • Alec
  • Felix
  • Demetri
  • Heidi

There are four others who have not yet been named.

There is also a human secretary named Gianna who appears in New Moon. She is privy to everything that goes on with the Volturi, and hopes to one day become a vampire as well. It is said that if she isn’t changed, she will be killed.

Wanted members

  • Carlisle Cullen: Carlisle stayed with the coven as a guest, but left due to his desire to avoid harming humans and created his own coven in the United States. His coven is now one of the largest civilized covens outside the Volturi.
  • Edward Cullen: Edward was asked to join the Volturi because of his ability to read minds, but declined twice. The first time Edward was attempting to commit suicide, and the second time he had been reunited with Bella.
  • Alice Cullen: Alice was asked to join because she can see into the future, but declined also. She shared a vision with Aro regarding Bella’s conversion to a vampire in order to placate them.
  • Bella Swan: Aro invited Bella to become a member of the Volturi as well, after seeing Alice’s vision. Aro believed that Bella would have interesting and useful powers as a vampire because she was immune to powers involving the mind as a human. Bella declined as well.
