Kamikaze Kaitō Jeanne (神風 怪盗 ジャンヌ, Kamikaze Kaitō Jannu?) is a manga by Arina Tanemura which falls under the shōjo genre, more specifically the Magical Girl sub-genre.
It originally ran between February 1998 and July 2000 in Shueisha’s Ribon Magazine, later released in 7 collective volumes. On June 16th 2007 the series was released in kanzenban format, the final 6th volume set to come out in October.
CMX, an imprint of DC Comics, licensed the series as Phantom-Thief Jeanne but later decided to use the original title. Toei Animation, the creator of the anime, refers to the series as Jeanne, the Kamikaze Thief on its English-language website.
Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was later turned into a TV anime. It was featured on a Japanese monthly manga magazine Ribon during February 1998 – July 2000, 30 stories in total. Seven volumes of the manga were published. It is also on sale in Canada and the US starting in the month of November 2005. The anime was a Toei Animation production, and aired from February 1999 – January 2000 on TV Asahi (44 episodes).

Plot
It is almost the year 2000. God’s power is scattered on Earth, and if He does not gather enough by the year 2000, He will die. The Devil, who wishes for this, sends his own agents to gather the energy in the form of chess pieces.
The 16-year-old Maron Kusakabe is usually a normal high school student, but she can transform, with the assistance of the angel Finn Fish, into the reincarnation of Jeanne D’Arc in order to hunt demons, which hide themselves within works of art. If a demon is defeated, the associated work of art disappears, which is why she is called a kaitō (“phantom-thief”).
Maron’s best friend is Miyako, the daughter of a diminutive police detective who aims to arrest Jeanne. Maron falls in love with Chiaki who is also secretly Sinbad (a demon hunter himself).
Jeanne’s weapons include her Checkmate pin which she can summon from a small “demon-detecting” device called the “Petit Claire”, her gymnastic ribbon, a fan, and later a sword (only in the manga). The ribbon can slice through anything if whipped, and can also be used to grab a hold of things. The fan deflects attacks, while the sword is basically your regular sword, only it can checkmate. In the anime, she first uses the “Rebound Ball” which is like a rubber yo-yo that can stick to almost anything, and is useful for smacking people with. In addition, it would appear she has access to comical bombs that can vary to smokescreens or actual explosions. The ribbon, which appears halfway through the series, is also used as a way of checkmating demons in the anime.
Chiaki, or “Kaitō Sindbad” (Sinbad), uses pins and daggers in the manga, but a tri-headed boomerang-like weapon in the anime. As time goes on in the anime, Sinbad is revealed to also use a special type of string that he can trap demons in. Also in episode 26 of the anime, he appears to have an entire arsenal of weapons hidden in his cloak. Unlike Jeanne, Sinbad is able to conjure several pins at once, blasting them towards a demon for a checkmate. He wears a piece of cloth over his mouth to cover his identity from Maron but soon later stops wearing it after she finds out that he is Sinbad.
If Jeanne’s hair ribbon or Sinbad’s bandanna are undone, then they go back to being their original selves. (Jeanne is seen undoing her hair ribbon in Episode 29 .) In the manga, Sinbad’s headband takes the place of the bandanna. If the headband is taken off, he goes back to his original self.
Maron and Chiaki fall in love with each other as time goes on. Chiaki at first “fakes” falling in love just to get closer to Maron, knowing Maron is Jeanne. Later he falls in love truthfully after realizing that Maron’s worth the effort, even if she does “hate” him.
Maron, on the other hand, is confused and does not know what “love” means because her parents abandoned her when she was around ten years old because they were having problems getting along, so no one taught her. At first their relationship gets off to a rocky start, with her always freaking out at Chiaki’s advances. She sees the other side of Chiaki though, and realizes that he’s not such a bad guy after all. After finding out that Chiaki is her rival, Sinbad, and that he only went after her because he knew she was Jeanne, she was deeply hurt and felt as though she could not trust anyone anymore.
The seven-volume manga contains a few plot twists involving the characters Finn Fish, Noin, and of course, Jeanne and the people around her. It tells in detail about Finn Fish’s backstory, which becomes an integral part of the storyline in the later chapters, expounding on Finn’s relationship with the other angels and the events that led to her becoming Maron’s partner.
The anime which has 44 episodes, is mostly filled with filler episodes; however, most of the important plot threads are stretched out over these episodes, appearing in roughly the same order as in the manga. The backstory of the angels is neglected completely, however.

Maron Kusakabe (日下部 まろん, Kusakabe Maron?) / “Kaito Jeanne” (怪盗 ジャンヌ, Kaitō Jannu?)
Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima
Maron is a seemingly ordinary 16-year-old high school student. She is extremely gifted in gymnastics. Her alter ego is Kamikaze Jeanne Kaito (phantom thief Jeanne), the reincarnation of Jeanne D’Arc. Through the angel Finn, who is sent to help her, she receives a mission from God to seal away Demons who have come to Earth to steal the beauty in human hearts. The Demons, which are hidden inside objects of great beauty (usually pieces of artwork) are captured when Jeanne embeds them with a pushpin and shouts “Checkmate!”, turning them into white chess pieces containing the demon’s power. She is a lonely character who puts up a brave front, often hiding her feelings behind a warm smile. At a very young age, her parents left her for their jobs, and they have not contacted her since then. She checks her mail box everyday, hoping to get a letter from her parents. The first phone call she gets is from her mother, informing her that they have have decided to get a divorce. As a result, she lives alone in an apartment, although is very close with the family of her best friend and neighbor Miyako. (She pays for her rent through checks from her father she receives in the mail). She begins with hate for Chiaki when they first meet, but she ends up in love with him as they become closer and the series progresses. She marries Chiaki in the manga, and they have a daughter named Natsuki (the reincarnated form of Finn, with a name from Finn’s past life.)
Chiaki Nagoya (名古屋稚空, Nagoya Chiaki?) / “Kaito Sinbad” (怪盗 シンドバッド, Kaitō Shindobaddo?)
Voiced by: Susumu Chiba
Chiaki is a 16-year-old student who lives in the apartment next door; he is also in Maron’s and Miyako’s class. He ran away from home because he wanted to be a Kaitō. Like Maron, Chiaki also has an alter ego, which is “Kaitō Sinbad.” He has the ability to seal demons using pins, like Jeanne, except the chess pieces are black, not white. Although he always seemed to go against Maron, who believes he is just a pervert. At first, he does it for a reason. He also knew about Maron’s true identity. Chiaki is a “ladies man” or “womanizer” and always tries to seduce Maron who can’t stand him and his habit of always trying to protect her, but her protests usually dissipate in a few seconds.
He is a Kaitō because of Access Time. In the anime, Finn had been sent down to earth to help Maron with Access, but she got kidnapped by the Devil. Access, helpless, ran to tell God, who told Access to watch over Maron. However, Access was confused. He floated around in a city, depressed until he was grabbed by a young teenage boy, Chiaki. Chiaki could see him. Access revealed the whole story at Chiaki’s house and Chiaki agreed to help him. Access gave him the power to seal demons and thus, Kaito Sinbad was born. Access apparently got the idea of naming Chiaki “Sinbad” from a movie. In the manga, it is not explained how Access found Chiaki. Chiaki’s life is not free of sorrows: his mother died when he was very young and from that day on Chiaki despised his father because he was working instead of being at his mother’s side. Later on, his father remarried in the attempt to give him a new family but this only alienated Chiaki further until he ran away from home several times. They finally reconcile when Maron convinces them to talk, and they finally understand each other’s feelings.
Finn Fish (フィン・フィッシュ, Fin Fisshu?)
Voiced by: Kumiko Nishihara
Finn Fish is the angel, or semi-angel (jun-tenshi), who helps Maron detect demons and is also the one who transforms Maron into Kaito Jeanne. As the story goes on, it’s revealed Finn had been manipulating Maron the whole time to gather chess pieces to deliver to the Angel emerald dragon; in the manga, she gathered them for Satan. The former semi-angel reveals herself as a fallen angel named Da-Tenshi Finn Fish. She was in love with the Devil. It is also revealed in the manga that she is reborn as Natsuki Nagoya, Chiaki and Maron’s daughter.
The manga and anime versions of how Finn became a Fallen Angel are very different. In the anime, she is on her way to Earth when she is kidnapped by the devil. He brainwashes her, but then wipes her memory and turns her back into a semi angel so that Maron wouldn’t be suspicious. She is brought back to her true self by Maron in episode 44. In the manga however, she voluntarily went to Lucifer. As one of the first three dark angels to become a semi angel, she was allowed to go to Earth with two other angels, Celcia and Toki. There, Celcia was injured and taken in by a priest named Sagami Kugahara. Misunderstanding the situation, Finn and Toki attacked Sagami, but as they were in their tiny forms, they only succeeded in cutting his finger. He brought them to Celcia, and Finn used a strand of her hair to fill her friend with holy energy. They explained to Sagami how holy energy is stored in their hair; white hair has the most potential for holy energy. In an effort to pay Sagami back, Finn went to meet him in cave, ignoring Toki’s pleas not to go, and even running away after he confessed that he had always loved her. Throughought her entire stay at Sagami’s house, she felt a thumping feeling in her chest that she realized to be her own life force warning her of danger. When she met him, she saw a girl frozen in ice, who (through a picture on Sagami’s desk) had previously been identified as “Natsuki,” Sagami’s sickly sister who died of an illness. As Finn angrily told Sagami, this was not true, and he had killed Natsuki in order to freeze her so the holy ice would melt faster, providing more holy water to be sold. She revealed herself to be Natsuki, calling Sagami “Nii-San” (big brother). He captured her and cut her green hair, which he knew had far more power than even the whitest hair, in order to dip it into the holy water and make it even stronger. However, her hair had the power of a full angel, and the power stored within exploded, killing many people. She was tried for murder in heaven and sentenced to entering the Gate of Annihilation. If she passed through, she would cease to exist. However, the devil approaches her with an offer, and she becomes his servant. It is later explained in volume 7 that the reason she returned was because she made a promise to listen to Access after she returned from Earth. She chose to side with the Devil and to become a Fallen Angel, so that she would be able to meet Access again. In the end, she sacrifies herself so that Maron survives the battle with the Devil. When she died, Access gave her his earring, and Natsuki Nagoya, Chiaki and Maron’s daughter, was reborn with the same earring in her hand. Finn is referred to as “Queen” by Myst and Noin in the anime and she is shown far more respect than in the manga. Finn is referred to as Finn in the manga and anime, though in the anime Access calls her “Finn-Chan”.
Access Time (アクセス・タイム, Akusesu Taimu?)
Voiced by: Akiko Yajima
Like Finn, Access is Chiaki’s “side-kick” who detects demons, and he is the one who gave Chiaki the power to transform into Kaitō Sinbad and to seal demons; he apparently chose the name Sinbad for Chiaki from a movie poster. He is a dark angel (kuro-tenshi) but he becomes a semi-angel (jun-tenshi) in volume 6 of the manga. However, he gives all of his holy power to Finn so she could be a full angel, and thus he turned back into a dark angel. He is deeply in love with her, even working to become a full angel so that he could be reincarnated with her. He would always tease Finn. In the past, when Finn and two other angels, Celcia and Toki, left to go to Earth, he made Finn a promise hat he would tell her something important once she had returned. However, she never came back, since she was banned from the heavens. In the manga, Access becomes reborn as Shinji Minazuki, Miyako and Yamato’s son. When he sees Natsuki clutching the earring that he gave her after Finn died, he proposes to her on the spot.
Miyako Todaiji (東大寺 都, Tōdaiji Miyako?)
Voiced by: Naoko Matsui
Miyako is Maron and Chiaki’s classmate who lives across the hall from Maron. Miyako is the child of parents who are detectives, and thus Miyako is always trying to catch Jeanne. In the anime, Miyako does not know that Maron is really Jeanne; she tries very hard with complex and rather dangerous tricks and plots in order to catch Jeanne, causing a lot of trouble for Jeanne and her mission. Here, Miyako does not know about Maron’s true self until the end. However, in the manga, Miyako knows that Maron is Jeanne and says that she tried to catch Jeanne so she could make a mistake and release her, being prepared to use the excuse that she was just a minor. She is madly in love with Chiaki, but she gives up on him since he is more interested in Maron. She is stubborn, unafraid to fight, and she has a fierce temper. She usually gets mad every time Jeanne escapes. After Yamato tells her about his feelings for her near the ending, she becomes angry, thinking he’s playing a sick joke, and she ignores him. In volume 7 of the manga, she is the wife of Yamato Minazuki, and they have a son named Shinji (the reincarnated form of Access).
Yamato Minazuki (水無月 大和, Minazuki Yamato?)
Voiced by: Naozumi Takahashi
Yamato is the classmate of Maron, Chiaki and Miyako. He holds the position of class president (iinchou), though most of the class seems to lack respect for him because of his gentle, unassuming nature. Yamato is a shy student who has a big crush on Maron. His innocent and pure heart makes it easy for demons to possess him. Later in the series, he joins Miyako to try and catch Sinbad. Though he has a crush on Maron, Miyako catches his attention, and in volume 6 of the manga, he confesses. She gets angry and pushes him into the lake, thinking he was making fun of her, and to prove his love, he tries to kiss her. She quickly smacked him away, telling him to have a clean face next time, although she is blushing. However, as shown in volume 7, he does marry Miyako and they have a son named Shinji.
Noin Claude
Voiced by: Kappei Yamaguchi (Japanese)
Noin is a demon who disguises himself as the history teacher in Maron’s class, Hijiri Shikaido. In the past, he was actually Noin Claude, who assisted the original Jeanne d’Arc as a knight 500 years ago. In the anime, when God did not save Jeanne, the one he deeply loved, from burning at the stake, he cursed God and surrendered his soul to the Devil. In the manga, he made sure that a demon possessed his past self when he traveled into the past with Maron. In the manga, he falls in love with Marron later in the series and vows to love Jeanne’s next reincarnated form. However, in the end of the anime, he dies protecting Maron and rises up to Heaven to join Jeanne d’Arc. In the manga, he has a pet dragon named Silk who he rarely shows affection to. He treats him rather harshly, but Silk is still devoted to him.
Myst (ミスト, Misuto?)
Voiced by: Wakana Yamazaki
Myst, who only appears in the anime, is another demon sent to kill Maron. Being a pure-bred demon, she is more powerful than Noin (a human who became a demon). She uses a candy box to hold demons. Her demons can only be defeated by Maron’s ribbon. She is defeated by Maron, aided by Noin who tells her Myst’s source of power, the candy box. However, seeing her broken and bruised form, Maron takes pity on her and gives her back the candy box.
