Neck Surgery Q & A

Why would I need Neck Surgery?

At New Life Ortho, we provide neck surgery to repair a variety of painful conditions, including:

  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease

In many cases, our providers try to treat your neck condition with nonsurgical treatments, including corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, regenerative medicine, and medication.

However, if these less invasive treatments do not effectively reduce your pain, they can perform expert neck surgery.

What are the available Neck Surgeries?

We provide a variety of neck surgeries, including anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), laminectomy, laminoplasty, and Mobi-C® cervical disc transplants.

Your lamina is the back part of your vertebra. Laminectomy and laminoplasty procedures remove parts of your lamina to reduce compression on the nerves that pass through your cervical spine.

Other reasons for Neck Surgery may include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bone fractures
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendon injuries
  • Muscle strains
  • Ligament sprains

Our providers also offer PRP after surgery to support your healing process, ideally reducing the time you need to spend away from your regular activities while you recover.

ACDF Surgery

During ACDF surgery, our providers repair damage caused by degenerative disc disease and herniated discs. After you are prepared for surgery and under anesthesia, they may make an incision in the front of your neck.

When they access your cervical spine, they remove the damaged disc — the discectomy part of the procedure. Then, they place a bone graft and secures it with medical-grade screws or wire — the fusion part of your surgery. In some cases, they put a plate into your cervical spine to provide support while the fusion occurs.

Mobi-C Cervical Disc

The Mobi-C cervical disc is a prosthetic cervical disc replacement that’s designed to restore segmental motion and disc height following a discectomy. The device absorbs shock and moves like a natural spinal disc, allowing you a full range of rotation and movement in your neck.

Our providers don’t need to remove any bone to fit you with a Mobi-C cervical disc, and it does not need any screws to hold it in place. They can repair your cervical spine with simple, one-step insertion

What should I expect after Neck Surgery?

In most cases, you need to wear a neck brace after surgery to provide extra support and stability while you heal.

Our providers prescribe medication to relieve any post-surgical pain and prevent infection. They also recommends physical therapy to restore your strength and range of motion.
