Via Disc Q & A

What is Via Disc?

VIA Disc NP is an off-the-shelf, non-surgical, processed allograft derived from human nucleus pulposus (NP) tissue. Its purpose is to provide supplementary support to intervertebral discs that have experienced degeneration.

Intervertebral Discs act as shock absorbers and allow for flexibility and movement in the spine. Over time, these discs can degenerate due to wear and tear, injury, or other factors.

An allograft is biological tissue that is sourced from a human donor and used for transplantation or supplementation in another individual. Allografts are carefully processed and screened to minimize the risk of disease transmission or rejection.

What are the benefits of via disc surgery?

The VIA Disc procedure offers several potential benefits for individuals experiencing issues with degenerated intervertebral discs:

  • Pain Relief
  • Improved Function
  • Minimally Invasive

For some patients, VIA Disc may provide an alternative to more invasive surgical interventions for disc-related issues. By restoring spinal stability and function, VIA Disc potentially allows patients to engage in activities they may have had to avoid due to pain and discomfort.

What happens during surgery?

VIA Disc surgery is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at treating degenerated intervertebral discs. Here's a brief overview of what happens during the surgery:

The patient is typically given local anesthesia to numb the area where the procedure will take place. In some cases, patients may receive mild sedation or general anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the surgery

A small incision is made in the patient'sback at the affected disc level, allowing access to the degenerated disc. The surgeon removes the damaged or degenerated nucleus pulposus (the inner core of the disc) using specialized instruments.

A synthetic disc, designed to mimic the natural function of the nucleus pulposus, is carefully inserted into the space previously occupied by the removed tissue.

The incision is closed with sutures or adhesive strips, and a sterile dressing is applied.

VIA Disc is considered a minimally invasive alternative to traditional spinal fusion surgery, with potentially shorter recovery times and less disruption to surrounding tissues.

What to expect after Surgery?

After VIA Disc surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area immediately after surgery to ensure they are stable and comfortable. Our surgeons will assess vital signs and check for any immediate post-surgical complications. They may prescribe pain medications or recommend over-the-counter options to help manage post-operative discomfort.

In some cases, physical therapy or rehabilitation may be recommended to help you regain strength, flexibility, and mobility in the treated area. Our surgeons will follow up to monitor your progress, assess healing, and make any necessary adjustments to your recovery plan.

Recovery times can vary, but many patients experience relief from pain and improved spinal function following VIA Disc surgery.
